INFISA Partners with Allianz to Launch Special Insurance Protection for Fishing Vessel Crews Abroad

A Solution to Overcome Social Security Hurdles for High-Risk Fishery Sector Workers.

JAKARTA, INDONESIA – In response to the challenges and high risks faced by migrant workers in the fishery sector, the Indonesian Fisherman Association (INFISA) has announced a strategic partnership with the world-leading insurance company, Allianz. This partnership introduces a special insurance program designed to provide comprehensive protection for Indonesian fishing crews working on internationally-flagged vessels.

This breakthrough initiative comes in response to the long-standing difficulties faced by owners of fishing vessels operating in international waters (deep sea). They have frequently encountered administrative and technical hurdles when trying to purchase insurance policies as a form of social security for their workers. As a result, many crew members have been working without adequate protection.

"For a long time, owners of deep-sea vessels have often complained about how complicated the process is to insure their crews, especially if the vessel is registered under a foreign flag," said a Chairman of INFISA. "This protection is a fundamental right for workers and a vital element of social security."

Working as a crew member on a deep-sea fishing vessel is recognized as one of the highest-risk professions in the world. The danger level is often compared to jobs in the mining and aviation sectors, such as airline pilots. The risks of work-related accidents, extreme weather conditions, and health issues at sea are real threats faced daily.

Through this partnership, INFISA and Allianz are launching the "International Crew Protection Program," specifically designed to meet these needs. The program simplifies the process for vessel owners to enroll their crew and provides protection benefits that include:

  • Personal Accident Insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • Medical Treatment and Emergency Evacuation Benefits
  • Permanent Disability Compensation

"We at INFISA hear the complaints and concerns of the crew members and their families directly. This protection is not just an insurance policy; it is a manifestation of the association's presence in providing proper social security," the representative added.

Allianz, as a globally reputable insurance company, brings its expertise in managing complex risks. This collaboration ensures that the program offered has an international scope and a reliable claims process, wherever the crew may be.

"Allianz has global experience in providing protection solutions for the maritime industry. We are proud to partner with INFISA to design a relevant and comprehensive product for these foreign exchange earners in the fishery sector," said a spokesperson from Allianz Indonesia.

This collaborative step between INFISA and Allianz is expected not only to provide peace of mind for the seafarers and their families but also to raise the safety and welfare standards of Indonesian fishery workers in the eyes of the world, while strengthening their bargaining position in the global fishing industry.
