The Indonesian Fisherman Association (INFISA) received a delegation from the leading French fishing company, Sapmer S.A. The visit marked a significant moment for INFISA to present an in-depth explanation of its "Responsible Recruitment Program," the foundational principles through which the organization ensures the welfare and protection of Indonesian fishing vessel crews.

The meeting, held on June 10, 2024, was both cordial and constructive, highlighting the long-term synergy Sapmer S.A. has in employing Indonesian crew members. This partnership focuses not only on fulfilling labor requirements but also on a shared vision for building a sustainable future for the fishing industry.
In its presentation, an INFISA representative emphasized that the responsible recruitment program is built upon three main pillars that must work in synergy: human resources, industry, and natural resources.

“The first pillar is the people. We ensure that every crew member who departs has gone through a process that is fair, transparent, and free from undue fees. Their welfare, from recruitment, during their time on board, until their return to their home country, is our top priority,” explained the INFISA representative.
The second pillar is the industry. INFISA elaborated on the importance of collaborating with vessel owners like Sapmer S.A. who share a mutual commitment to ethical and sustainable fishing practices. This synergy fosters a conducive and mutually beneficial work environment where productivity aligns with the respect for workers' rights.
The third pillar, natural resources, serves as the foundation for the industry's sustainability. Sapmer S.A. shares the view that the exploitation of marine resources must be conducted wisely to preserve the marine ecosystem for future generations.
The delegation from Sapmer S.A. enthusiastically welcomed the presentation, expressing their admiration for the principles upheld by INFISA. They particularly appreciated INFISA's active role as a non-governmental organization (NGO) that is consistently present at every stage, from the recruitment process to ensuring the seafarers' safe return to their home country.
INFISA's presence in monitoring all involved parties was deemed a crucial added value. It provides assurance that the entire process adheres to international standards and human rights principles.
Furthermore, the ability to resolve any arising labor disputes internally, rather than through legal action, was highlighted. This is vital for sustainable fisheries and mutual protection.
The event reaffirms a shared commitment, with INFISA campaigning to continuously strengthen responsible recruitment practices and build a global fishing industry that is not only economically advanced but also excels in humanity and environmental sustainability.
